Myth: Supplements Can Help You Lose Weight

The cause of the unwanted weight gain is a breakdown in the health of the body. There is a breakdown in the organ system, glandular system or hormones, etc. somewhere in the body and the result is fat-storing.

The weight loss supplement industry is massive. There are all sorts of different supplements that are popping up and they all claim to have dramatic effects like boosting metabolism, inhibiting fat storage, reduce cravings, suppress appetite, burn fat, etc. Buyer beware: most of these supplements may seem “natural” but are never very effective when studied.

Perhaps the biggest shortcoming of these supplements is that they are not working on the cause of the weight gain; they are not working on improving the overall health of the body. Instead they are targeting the symptom (fat) in the body. The fat in the body is the symptom of a breakdown somewhere else.  For this reason alone, weight loss supplements will never cause healthy, permanent weight loss. That being said, there are a few supplements that can have a modest effect on weight loss. The best ones may help you lose a few pounds over several months, but it is not sustainable and usually the pounds come back with a few friends.

Supplements are just that – something that supplements what we are already doing. Interestingly, the main reason that supplements may cause a few pounds of weight loss in some people is due to the placebo effect. People fall for the marketing and want the supplements to help them lose weight, so they become more conscious of what they eat. In becoming more conscious they begin to raise their level of health.

Bottom Line: Supplements do not work on the cause of the weight gain and will therefore have little or no lasting impact on weight loss. Supplements should complement a good, healthy body-shape appropriate diet
