Myth: Weight Loss Diets Actually Work

The weight loss industry wants you to believe that “diets” work. Weight loss is a “cash cow” and the industry wants its slice of the pie. However, studies show that dieting almost never works in the long-term. 85% of people end up gaining the weight back within a year (1).

Additionally, studies show that people who go on a diet are actually the ones most likely to gain weight in the future. Yikes! This means that dieting is a consistent predictor of future weight ‘gain’ – not loss (2).

Diets work on the symptom of your problem (the weight). They doesn’t address the cause the weight gain. While you may have some temporary weight loss, by virtue of the fact that you are working on the symptom and not the cause, your weight will come back.

The cause of weight gain is a breakdown in body function and health. A better goal that dieting is to set a goal to change your lifestyle and become a healthier, happier and fitter person.

Healthy weight loss is a side-effect of improving the quality of your health. In addition to losing weight you can experience better rest, more energy, less allergies, improved digestion when you target and work on improving your level of health.

Going on a diet and starving yourself probably won’t work in the long-term.

Bottom Line: Despite what the weight loss industry would have you believe, dieting usually doesn’t work in the long term. Most people gain the weight back. It is not lose weight to get healthy, but get healthy to lose weight.
