Inflammation Erodes Tendons
Overweight individuals are putting their tendons at risk because of chronic inflammation. Just as the dripping of water can wear down granite stone over time, our bones and tendons (while not as hard as granite) are eroded by chronic inflammation.
Chronic inflammation will cause erosion of the patella tendon. This is the tendon that connects the kneecap to the lower leg. Jumping up and down, playing sports, overtraining can lead to degeneration and pain in this tendon. Now it is known that chronic inflammation from your diet can do the same thing.
Being Overweight Indicates Inflammation
The body does not like to be overweight. A study found that men with waistlines greater than 33 inches, and 28 inches for women, were at increased risk for developing patella tendon problems. This is because fat accumulation around the waistline is associated with a state of chronic low-grade inflammation that can erode tendons without any symptoms initially, which is the same process that occurs in heart blood vessels before a heart attack occurs(1).
Stop the Degeneration
Joints, bones, spinal discs, and muscles can all degenerate and become painful as a consequence of low-grade inflammation created by a pro-inflammatory diet. The shape of your body and where it is holding onto the weight is unique in everybody. Understanding what your body type is, is the first step in understanding what you can do to effectively lose weight and stop the inflammation. Take steps now to correct your diet and lifestyle to protect what you have left of your health and your body.
