As the twig is BENT, so GROWS the tree

"The first two years of a child's life are the most influential developmental period in the post-natal development. At no other time in our lives is the expression and development of our human potential so greatly influenced. Interference to the developing nervous system will have far reaching and permanent effects on the child's development." -- Dr. Martin Rosen, Educator

  • Infant Nervous System Development

The period from birth to two is when the brain reaches 80-90% of adult volume.

Misalignments in tiny bodies created from the birth process, from tumbles, falls, and bumping into things cause distortions and compensations patterns that lay the foundation for potential pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders later on...unless detected and corrected early.

  • The Birth Process is Traumatic

Many newborns come into the world with distortion patterns and misalignments in their tiny spines and skulls due to birth trauma. Common birth procedures, such as C-section, Forceps Delivery, Vacuum Delivery, Abnormal Presentations, The Birth Process - time in transition, can influence infant spinal and cranial growth patterns. Additionally, physicians who pull or twist excessively on the infant's head or arms during the birth process can injure the delicate spinal cord.

"The primary mechanisms of injury to the spinal cord appears to be excessive traction applied to the spinal canal and cord during the birth process." (Symposium on operative obstetrics, Donn, MD: Vol. 10, No. 2, June 1983)

  • As the Twig is Bent, So Grows the Tree

Left unidentified and uncorrected, the baby's body will work to adapt and compensate to the birth trauma. Eventually this new "compensated state" will become accepted as the "new norm" upon which the baby will continue to grow and develop.

This fact suggests that there is a pressing clinical need to identify children at risk for developmental disorders within the first year of life and to initiate appropriate interventions.

  • How does chiropractic work for children?

Your child's spinal column is made up of 24 independent vertebrae that enable them to twist, bend and move throughout the day. The spine, along with the skull bones, protect the delicate central nervous system that controls the body's ability to grow, repair and function at its best by communicating with every cell, tissue and organ of the body.

Subluxations of the spine and skull bones, commonly known as joint dysfunctions, occur when two or more vertebrae/bones become restricted and impede the body's ability to communicate with itself. Joint dysfunction in an infant are often the result of the birthing procedure.

The forces and procedures used to provide care to infant and children is very different from those used when working on adults. An infant's body/spine is delicate and therefore the treatments are delicate. Dr. Erickson is specifically trained to locate and correct joint dysfunctions in babies and children by applying a gentle, targeted corrective movement where and when needed.
