Myth: Losing Weight is a Linear Process

Once you start on a weight loss program it is all downhill, right? Unfortunately, losing weight is usually not a linear process, like some people think. I have noticed that your body type greatly influences how quickly or slowly you lose those unwanted pounds.

Some people will lose a lot of weight initially and then it will taper off. Others will lose it very slowly – some days and weeks you may lose, while during others you may gain a little bit.

This is not a cause for concern. It is normal for body weight to fluctuate up and down by a few pounds. Remember that your ability to lose weight is strongly related to your body’s level of health. As you begin to work with your body type and promote healing in the body, it will begin to make repairs. Initially, the body’s efforts may not turn towards fat-burning until it has reached a certain level of healing.

There may be some times that you notice that your clothes fit differently and that your body seems trimmer, yet the scale indicates that you haven’t lost any weight. This is actually an excellent sign that things are working.

Let’s not forget that, in women, the weight can fluctuate with the menstrual cycle.

As long as the general trend is going downwards, no matter how much it fluctuates, you will still succeed over the long term.

Bottom Line: Losing weight can take a long time. The process is generally not completely linear, as weight tends to fluctuate up and down by a few pounds.
